The Great Greek Mediterranean Grill in Irvine is an easy, reliable stop for a filling Mediterranean meal in Orange County. We ate here right after a session at Activate Games in Tustin, about five minutes away, and left full. This Great Greek Irvine review covers what we ordered, what it cost, the seating and how the staff handled food allergies.

  • Alcohol: yes, draft and bottled beer
  • What we ordered: a gyro pita, a gyro plate, and chicken and lamb kabob plates

  • Food allergies: staff read our allergy cards and knew the menu well

Atmosphere and Seating

The Great Greek is a fast-casual restaurant. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. The dining room is bright and roomy, with plenty of tables, so we never felt crowded. There is also a covered patio out front with outdoor seating, which is nice on a warm Orange County afternoon.

Service was good. The staff was friendly, patient while we decided, and quick to bring out the food.

The Menu

The menu covers the Greek and Mediterranean basics: gyros, souvlaki (kabob) plates, salads, wraps, dips like tzatziki and hummus, and desserts. Entree plates come with a side salad, tzatziki and pita, plus your choice of rice pilaf or fries. Lemon potatoes or feta fries cost $1.50 extra.

There is a kids menu with options like cheese pizza, a grilled cheese pita, chicken fingers and smaller gyro and souvlaki plates, priced from $9.99 to $15.99 with a side and a drink. They also offer family meal deals if you are feeding a group.

What We Ordered

Between the three of us, we had four dishes. The portions were big, and we were full by the end. We had planned to try dessert but didn't have room.

Gyro Pita

The Great Greek Gyro ($12.99) is a warm pita stuffed with gyro meat, romaine, tomato, red onion, tzatziki and a generous amount of feta. It is a solid, filling option if you want something lighter than a full plate.

Gyro Plate

The gyro plate comes with a big pile of sliced gyro meat over pita, topped with diced tomato and red onion, with rice pilaf, tzatziki and a lemon wedge. Good value for the amount of food.

Chicken and Lamb Kabob Plates

We ordered two souvlaki plates, one chicken ($19.99) and one lamb ($21.99). Both came with nicely charred skewers over rice pilaf, grilled pita, tzatziki and lemon. The lamb was our favorite dish of the meal.

Next Time: Baklava Ice Cream

The baklava ice cream ($6.99) caught our eye: crumbled baklava over vanilla bean ice cream with honey. We were too full this time, so it is on the list for next time. If you are dealing with nut allergies, note that baklava is made with walnuts.

How They Handled Food Allergies

Our son has multiple food allergies, so we always hand over allergy cards when we order. The staff here took the time to read through the cards and answer our questions. They seemed to know what was in each dish, which always makes us more comfortable.

A few things to keep in mind at Greek and Mediterranean restaurants in general:

  • Nuts: baklava and some desserts contain walnuts.
  • Sesame: hummus and some dips are made with tahini, which is sesame.
  • Dairy: tzatziki and feta show up on a lot of dishes, but you can usually ask for them on the side or left off.

As always, confirm your specific allergies with the staff when you order.

Is The Great Greek Irvine Worth It?

Yes, for a casual, filling meal. It was not the most memorable Mediterranean meal we have had, but everything was good, the portions were generous, service was friendly, and there was plenty of space to sit. Prices are about average for a fast-casual spot in Orange County, and the beer list and patio are a bonus for parents.

It is an especially easy pick if you are spending time at Activate Games Tustin or The District at Tustin Legacy, since it is only a few minutes away. For something completely different in Orange County, try Rice N' Spice in Anaheim, the county's only Sri Lankan restaurant.
