Sri Lanka Itinerary: Our 4-Week Family Trip (Colombo, Road Trips and Where We Stayed)

Sep 6, 2026 | Destinations, Sri Lanka | 0 comments

This is our full Sri Lanka itinerary from a 24-night family trip: two adults and our 10-year-old, who has food allergies. We have family in Sri Lanka, so we used Colombo as our home base and went out on two road trips with a private driver, one through the south coast and hill country, and one through the Cultural Triangle and the east coast.

Below you will find the route map, our day-by-day plan, every place we stayed with what we paid, how we got around, what it cost, and what we would change. Each section links to a more detailed post if you want the full story.

Quick Summary

  • Trip length: 24 nights in Sri Lanka in late July and August, flying Turkish Airlines through Istanbul.
  • Structure: a Colombo base with two road trips, of five and seven days.
  • Getting around: Uber in Colombo, and a private driver for both road trips.
  • Highlights: climbing Sigiriya Rock, the Weligama Bay Marriott, a surprise perahera in Ella, Nine Arch Bridge, Polonnaruwa, the Dambulla caves and the beach at Pasikudah.
  • Biggest costs: hotels. Food, drivers and Uber were cheap by US standards.
  • Food allergies: far easier than we expected, thanks to hotel chefs and a translated allergy card.

Shorter Sri Lanka Itineraries Based on Our Trip

Most people do not have 24 nights. If we were planning a first trip with less time, this is how we would use our route.

10 Days

  • Day 1: arrive in Colombo.
  • Days 2 to 4: Pinnawala on the way to Sigiriya, Sigiriya Rock, Polonnaruwa and Dambulla. Stay two nights in Sigiriya or Dambulla.
  • Days 5 to 7: drive to Ella through the hill country, with a night in Nuwara Eliya or two in Ella.
  • Days 8 to 9: down to the south coast for a beach stay in Weligama, with a stop at Galle Fort.
  • Day 10: back to Colombo for your flight.

14 Days

  • Follow the 10-day plan, and add two nights at the beach in Pasikudah after Polonnaruwa (in the May to September season), an extra night in Weligama, and a day or two in Colombo at the start or end.

Getting Around Sri Lanka

Uber in Colombo

Inside Colombo, we used Uber for everything, in both cars and tuk-tuks. Rides were quick to arrive and usually cost just a few dollars. Our Colombo guide has the details, including the airport taxi.

A Private Driver for the Road Trips

For both road trips we hired a private driver, Nilantha Chandimal, and we highly recommend him. He is an excellent, safe and friendly driver, and very knowledgeable. You can reach him on WhatsApp at +94 77 386 0045.

  • How it worked: before each trip, we sent him our itinerary and hotels, and he gave us a price for the whole trip.
  • What it cost: about $600 to $700 per trip for our five-day and seven-day road trips. That included everything: his food, his accommodation and fuel.
  • How we paid: cash in US dollars at the end, which is what he and most tourist drivers prefer.
  • Why it was worth it: he knew where everything was, so we never wasted time finding places. He also suggested routes, stops and things to see along the way. He is not a tour guide, but with his experience he almost acted like one.

Self-driving is possible, but traffic, narrow mountain roads and driving on the left make it hard work. The famous hill country train is another option. We planned to take it from Ella but skipped it because of confusing schedules and ticket timing.

Practical Tips for Planning Your Sri Lanka Trip

  • Visa (ETA): you need an Electronic Travel Authorization before you fly. We applied online and were approved almost instantly, but processing times can vary, so apply at least 30 days ahead to be safe. Since May 25, 2026, the 30-day tourist ETA has been free for US passport holders and citizens of 39 other countries, under a one-year program that is under review, so check the current fee before you apply. Use only the official ETA website, since look-alike sites charge extra fees.
  • Money: credit cards were accepted almost everywhere we went, and we never needed an ATM. Carry a small amount of Sri Lankan rupees, mainly for tips. We tipped in US dollars in some places too.
  • Phone and data: Google Fi worked across the whole country on our plan, with no setup. Check that your plan includes data in Sri Lanka. There were some dead zones in rural areas, and every hotel and apartment had Wi-Fi.
  • Best time to go: the south and west coasts are best from about December to April, and the east coast from about May to September. The hill country and the Cultural Triangle can be visited year-round. We went in August, which was the right season for Pasikudah.
  • Language: most people we met spoke English, especially in tourist areas. We speak the local language, which helped, but you will manage fine without it.
  • Safety: we felt safe everywhere we went, and Colombo felt very safe.
  • Water and street food: we drank bottled water and skipped street food and very small local places.
  • Food allergies: add allergies to every booking, carry a translated allergy card and extra medication, and talk to the chef. See our Sri Lanka food allergies guide.
  • Research: join a few Sri Lanka travel Facebook groups before you go. They are full of recent, practical advice.

How Much Our Sri Lanka Trip Cost

Hotels were by far our biggest expense. Everything else was cheap compared to traveling in the US.

ItemWhat we paid
Hotels and apartments (24 nights)About $3,400 to $3,700 total
Private driver (two road trips)About $600 to $700 per trip, all inclusive
Uber in ColomboUsually about $1 to $6 per ride
Meal at an average restaurantAbout $10 to $12, roughly half of what we would pay at home
Large bottle of Lion beerAbout $3. Imported alcohol is expensive
FlightsPaid with credit card points

We flew Turkish Airlines business class using Chase Ultimate Rewards points. Our Turkish Airlines and Touristanbul post explains how we booked it.

What We Would Do Differently

  • More time on the south coast. One night in Weligama was not enough. Next time we want more beach days around Weligama, Galle and Hikkaduwa.
  • Two nights in Dambulla. Jetwing Lake deserved more time, and it is a good base for an elephant safari at Minneriya.
  • Start Sigiriya at opening time to beat the heat and the crowds.
  • Sort out the Ella train early if you want to ride it.
  • Add Kandy and Jaffna. We skipped Kandy because of road closures during the Esala Perahera, and we would love to see Jaffna in the north on a future trip.

Sri Lanka Itinerary FAQ

How many days do you need in Sri Lanka?

Ten days covers the highlights at a fast pace: Sigiriya, the hill country, Ella and the south coast. Two weeks lets you add a beach stay and slow down. We had 24 nights, which included plenty of family time in Colombo.

Is it better to hire a driver in Sri Lanka?

For most families, yes. We paid about $600 to $700 per road trip, including the driver's food, accommodation and fuel. A good driver saves time and suggests stops you would never find yourself.

Do US citizens need a visa for Sri Lanka?

You need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before you fly. As of October 2026, the 30-day tourist ETA is free for US passport holders under a one-year program, so check the current fee on the official ETA website. Apply at least 30 days ahead to be safe.

Can you use credit cards in Sri Lanka?

Yes, almost everywhere we went. Keep some rupees for tips, small shops and entrance fees that are cash only.

What is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

It depends on the coast. December to April is best for the south and west, and May to September for the east. The hill country and the Cultural Triangle work year-round.

Is Sri Lanka good for families?

Yes. People are friendly, English is widely spoken, it felt safe, and there is a great mix of beaches, wildlife, history and hiking for kids. With food allergies, plan ahead and talk to the chef everywhere you eat.

Final Thoughts

Sri Lanka was easier, safer and more affordable than we expected, and tourism has grown a lot since our last visit. Using Colombo as a base with two road trips gave us beaches, tea country, ancient cities, elephants and plenty of downtime, all in one trip. Sigiriya was the highlight, but there was something memorable almost every day.

If you are planning your own Sri Lanka itinerary, book your driver and hotels early, apply for your ETA ahead of time, and leave room for surprises. Some of our best moments, like the Ella perahera, were not in the plan.
